The recent “EDPS TechDispatch on Explainable Artificial Intelligence report” [1] sheds light on these issues and offers valuable insights for the anti-fraud community.

The “Black Box” Effect

AI systems, especially those using complex machine learning models, often operate as “black boxes,” making it difficult to understand how decisions are made. This opacity can lead to misplaced trust and over-reliance on AI, potentially resulting in biased or inaccurate outcomes. For instance, biased training data can cause AI systems to favor certain demographics, which is particularly concerning in fraud detection.

Explainable AI (XAI)

Explainable AI (XAI) aims to provide clear and understandable explanations for AI actions and decisions. XAI is crucial for ensuring transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI systems.
